Valentine Heart Wand

Yield: 12

Materials

  • 2 Red Felt Sheets
  • 2 Pink Felt Sheets
  • 12 Wooden Dowels
  • 1 Black Puffy Paint
  • Sequins
  • Glue Gun
  • Chiffon Ribbon/Yarn
  • Stuffing
  • Needle & Thread/or Sewing Machine

Instructions

  • Download heart shape template (in blog post under STEP ONE). Cut out one heart to use as a pattern.  Put the pattern on the felt.  Either pin the pattern to the fabric, or hold the pattern and fabric tight together. Cut out two felt hearts. (If you are making more than one wand, you need 2 felt hearts per wand.  EX. 6 wands = 12 Felt hearts cut out)  I would recommend cutting all the hearts out at once.
  • Put two heart shapes together. Sew the two hearts together leaving a small opening at the bottom point. (You will need this opening for the dowel as well as to add stuffing to the heart.)  You can either hand sew this or use a sewing machine.  Another option would be to glue gun the hearts together.  Whatever you decided to do, leave an opening at the point of the heart.
  • Take the heart and put a small handful of stuffing material inside the opening.  I like to use a dowel to help push the stuffing inside.  If you want your heart fuller, add more stuffing. Once you have an amount of stuffing you like, wiggle the dowel inside the heart to see where I want it to go.
  • Next plug in your hot glue gun.  Take out the dowel from your heart and a squirt of glue inside.  I just add glue right on top of the stuffing.
  • Put the dowel in the heart on the glue.  Push on the sides of the bottom of the heart point too makes sure it attaches to the dowel.  If needed, add a little more glue to secure the heart to the dowel.
  • Now time to decorate your heart! Add some sequins, jewels, buttons, pompoms, etc.  I used sequins for the embellishment and puffy paint to draw the faces.  To help not burn fingers, toothpicks really help out when applying sequins.  Add a glue dot to the fabric and place the sequin on top of the glue drop with a toothpick.
  • Once you are done decorating and the puffy paint has dried, add a whimsical ribbon.  I like to use chiffon for this but yarn or any kind of ribbon will work great!  To attach the ribbon to the wand, I would recommend hot gluing the ribbon to the dowel.  Cut a 12-18 inch ribbon.  Add a little glue to the back of the dowel and put it in the middle of the cut ribbon.  Grab the ribbon from each side and tie a knot or a bow around the dowel. Once the knot or bow is tied, cut the ribbon to the desired length.
  • Now you are all done! Go wave that wand around and have some fun!  Happy crafting! (If giving wands to kids make sure to use under adult supervision and keep out of mouths.)
