Does Winter seem to drag on? Ever wonder how to get the most out of the season? Today we are sharing 5 ways to really enjoy Winter!

1. Mindset

I LOVE winter! Really though, it’s my favorite season! But guess what?!?! It wasn’t always this way! Jake and I were looking back at some old blog posts when we were updating our new blog layout and I was surprised to see posts from 8 years ago where I wasn’t the biggest winter lover! To my surprise, I totally forgot I didn’t love winter! I grew up in Arizona and had never experience a winter season before, so learning to love it was a process for me.

There are lots of people out there that enjoy winter but as it comes to the last months of winter and it keeps going on I hear often how everyone is so ready for winter to be over. Today We wanted to share 5 ways to really enjoy winter and get the most of it!

First is mindset! Our minds are so powerful and strong. What we feed it and tell it can factor into how we feel! If you are not the biggest fan of winter, try telling yourself things you love about the season. It could be the sight of fresh falling snow, the sun peaking out on a cold day, or even a 5 minute break to curl up next to the fire with a blanket! You could even write a list on gloomy days of things you love about the season and read that list anytime you are craving for a new change of season.

2. Dress for the Occasion

I know this one may seem obvious but dressing for the occasion in the winter really helps. Being an Arizona girl myself, I honestly didn’t know how to dress for winter. When I was in college I would wear a short sleeve shirt, skinny jeans with slip on socks, vans and a zip up hoodie when it was a blizzard out! Really though, I did my first year of college in Rexburg, Idaho and it got pretty windy and cold up there. It literally took me years before I figured out how to dress for the winter and as soon as I did something switched in me. I became a HUGE snow lover! Now every time it snows, you can find me running out and being the first in the neighborhood to go play in it!

Stock up on some staple winter gear that you can use over and over! A good beanie, warm gloves, down coat or wool coat, snow pants, turtle neck sweater, wool socks, and boots should do it! You can of course always style up with fun scarves and colorful coats once you have your basics, but when first buying winter clothes stick to the color pallets you can wear every single day! I am not a huge fan of scarves because I don’t like having to many layers on, so I tend to stick to high collar turtle necks and coats to avoid an extra layer. Scarves look super cute though, and if you are in a windy state, they are great to have around to cover your face from a cold breeze!

3. Plan Fun Activities

Just because its winter time doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy being outside! Look in your area, or ask around some of your friends their favorite winter activities for some ideas! When I did this I found some really fun winter things to do like dog sledding that I would of never thought of! To see some winter outdoor activities, you can find 40 affordable and fun ideas here.

One of our favorite winter activities we look forward to every single year is visiting the Ice Castles! It’s super neat because every year they are different! Depending on the weather and castle builders, the architecture varies! We really enjoy exploring and checking these out and exploring for a few hours! That is where all of todays pictures are from! You can find our past Ice Castle escapades here from 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2015. This was our first time going while it was snowing! We got a fresh 2 feet of snow the night before and it was continuing to dump snow! It was sooo magical! Night time at the ice castles are pretty neat to though because the castles light up in different colors!

4. Hand Warmers

Can I just say best invention ever?!???!! Seriously though, the people that created these are genius! Jake and I have taken hand warmers along with us in the dead cold of winter in Canada, Oregon Coast, Boston, and around Utah and they have been life savors! Every winter we will buy a big box and it lasts us the entire season. We keep them by our gloves in our house as well as in our car incase of a spur of the moment adventure!

They also have toe warmers, but the hand warmers are my favorite. I’ll stick them in my gloves whenever we go out for an adventure. The warmers are pretty cheap and really make being out in the cold so much for fun! You can get a good 10 hours of heat from these babies, and when they start to loose the heat you just shake them up some more and they start to reactivate! Trust me, these make winter adventures so much for doable and fun!

5. Spend Time With Friends/ Loved Ones

Being around people you love can really improve your mood! If you are feeling some winter blues, or need a pick me up….call a friend and ask them to lunch or invite them to do a fun activity together. Your friend might be feeling some winter blues too, so they could really appreciate you reaching out to do something fun with them! It’s always nice to surround yourself with fun lvoing people to lift your mood.

With winter there are days the weather is not super ideal or safe to go out, so it’s nice to have some back up plans! Getting together with friends and family can be a great way to enjoy the season and still have some fun! Jake and I thought having smore’s, or game nights could be really fun to invite friends to!

These pictures are so fun and colorful! I totally agree with all of your tips! We’re Texans and often don’t dress appropriately for the season haha. I’ve tried to work on that this year!

Great tips! I think time with loved ones is always a good way to enjoy something – any time of year! 🙂 It’s a shame we don’t get snow here in winter, I think it would make everything so much more fun! 🙂

Hope that you are having a nice weekend 🙂 We spent yesterday on the bay celebrating Australia day – despite the heat! Our heatwave continues!

How funny….we were just at our Ice Castles yesterday. And not only did we have our hand warmers in, but the foot ones too.
I do think changing our perspective is key. I have a friend that didn’t grow up with the snow, so she’s like a kid anytime it’s snowing. And that’s so refreshing from the grumbling I usually hear!
